The Savannah Music Festival
Savannah presents itself with true culture, hosting Georgia’s largest musical arts festival and one of the most distinguishing music festivals around. Savannah Music Festival, (SMF) is building a reputation on its devotion to a living vibrant musical tradition regularly presenting commissioned works, unique and imaginative productions, and rare regional appearances by renowned artists in Classical music such as The Emerson String Quartet (violinists Philip Setzer and Eugene Drucker, violist Lawrence Dutton, and cellist David Finckel) they stand alone in the history of string quartets with an unparalleled list of achievements over three decades. The Quartet brings a formidable program to Savannah this year, performing two completely different concerts featuring the quartets of Dvorak. This concert will be co-hosted by Fred Child from American Public Media’s Performance Today. (March 30-31, 6:15pm. Telfair Academy)
Hungarian virtuoso fiddler Roby Lakatos (right) blends jazz and classical playing atop the gypsy violin tradition. His unparalleled technique places him among the world’s finest players and his ensemble conjures a 19th century romanticism that fuses the village gypsy idiom with hot club jazz.(March 19, 7:30pm. Lucas Theater for the Arts)
SMF also brings into the mix a blend of superb blues, bluegrass, jazz, gospel and other styles of American and international roots music.
